hair porosity

Hair porosity is all about how well your hair can absorb and hold onto moisture. Think of it like as sponge can soak up water. Some hair types can easily absorb moisture, while others struggle to do so. Understanding your hair’s porosity can help you choose the right products and techniques to keep it hydrated and healthy. By knowing your hair’s porosity, you can determine how frequently you need to moisturize , the type of products the work best for your hair, and how to prevent excessive dryness or greasiness. It’s an important factor to consider in your hair care. There are three types: low, medium, and high porosity.

Types of hair porosity

 Low porosity hair:

when hair has low porosity, it means that cuticles, which are the outer  layer of the hair shaft, are tightly closed. This makes it difficult for moisture to penetrate the hair shaft and be absorbed. As a result, low porosity hair tents to repel water and products, making it feel resistant to moisture. It can take longer for low porosity hair to dry and it may feel dry or weighed down when using heavy  products.

Medium porosity hair:

when hair has medium porosity. It means that the cuticles, which are the outer layer of the hair shaft, are slightly raised. This allows for a good balance of moisture absorption and retention. Medium porosity hair can easily absorb and hold onto moisture, making it more manageable and less prone to dryness or greasiness. It’s often considered the ideal porosity because it allows for effective moisture penetration without excessive absorption. With medium porosity hair you can use a variety of products and techniques to maintain its hydration and keep it healthy and shiny.

High porosity hair:

when hair has high porosity, it means that the cuticles are open or damaged. This allows for quick and easy absorption of moisture but also leads to rapid moisture loss. High porosity hair tends to feel dry, frizzy, and prone breakage. It can easily absorb water and products, but struggles to retain moisture.
